Background: HIV/AIDS education and training programmes for health professionals and community health educators have become increasingly international in scope. Method: In 1995, 1996, and 1997, two types of programs (which included didactic and field/clinical observation) were held in the US at various sites, training providers from East Africa and including action planning. In 1999, faculty from the progam followed up with onsite visits with trainees and conducted follow-up surveys. Results: Both anectdotal and survey results sugggest increased efficacy and capacity of health care workers, not only as practioners, but as opinion leaders and trainers in their own communities. Conclusions: International training programs can impact the capacity and resilience of participants (both faculty and staff) and have long-term and exponential impact. Evolving technologies support the development of ongoing, targeted programmes.
