V.P. GORE TO KICK OFF FIRST EVER NATIONAL SUMMIT ON FOOD RECOVERY Release No. 0309.97 Media Advisory Laura Trivers (202) 720-4623 V.P. GORE TO KICK OFF FIRST EVER NATIONAL SUMMIT ON FOOD RECOVERY WASHINGTON, Sept. 8, 1997--Vice President Al Gore will join Agriculture Secretary Dan Glickman and leaders in the nation's fight against hunger for the first-ever National Summit on Food Recovery and Gleaning next week in Washington. More than 300 people -- some actively involved in fighting hunger and others wanting to learn more -- will participate in the summit Monday, Sept. 15 and Tuesday, Sept. 16. Hundreds more are expected to participate at 100 local down link sites around the country. The Vice President will address the Summit during the morning session that begins Monday, Sept. 15 at 10 a.m. at the Andrew Mellon Auditorium on Constitution Ave. between 12th and 14th Sts. N.W. Glickman will speak following the Vice President's remarks. The summit will help expand the growing national movement to use food recovery as a way of helping the hungry. Every year more than 96 billion pounds of food is thrown away -- food that should be recovered to feed the hungry. Co-hosting the Summit with Glickman are Christine Vladmiroff, President and CEO of Second Harvest; Christina Martin, Executive Director of Foodchain; Reps. Tony Hall and Frank Wolf, co-chairs of the Congressional Hunger Center; and Pat Thibodeau, executive director of the Chef and the Child Foundation. The Summit hosts will also address the participants during the Monday morning session. Summit participants will spend Monday afternoon helping Washington area food recovery and anti-hunger programs. The community service projects include field gleaning at Parker Farms, in Clinton, MD; sorting nonperishable food items at the Capital Area Community Food Bank; working at the D.C. Cetnral Kitchen; and delivering recovered foods to Martha's Table, a congregate feeding site in the area. Tuesday morning there will be a series of hands-on workshops to address specific aspects of food recovery. A detailed schedule follows.
