ga-crop-weather State Georgia Crop Weather Week Ending Date February 11, 2007 Issue GA-CW0607 Agricultural Summary February 12, 2007 WINTER WHEAT GROWTH SLOWED The weather this week was characterized by variable temperatures and very little rainfall, according to the USDA, NASS, Georgia Field Office. Average high temperatures ranged from the upper 40's to the upper 60's. Lows were in the 20's and 30's for much of the state. Average rainfall was as low as 0.04 inches, with nearly half of the State not receiving any rain. Soil moisture conditions were rated at 0% very short, 5% short, 81% adequate, and 14% surplus. The cold weather slowed wheat growth. Recent wet conditions hampered fertilization of small grains. Some fields looked yellow due to nitrogen deficiency. Fortunately, with the drier weather this week, farmers were able to resume fertilization. The cold weather also held back the growth of winter grazing and cattlemen continued to feed more than normal. Field preparation work for early spring vegetables and row crops has begun. Other activities included mowing cotton stalks, controlled burning of forestry land, application of lime and poultry litter, and the routine care of poultry and livestock. County Extension Agents reported an average of 5.3 days suitable for fieldwork. DISTRICT 2 - NORTH CENTRAL No comments available. DISTRICT 3 - NORTHEAST Cold temperatures and snow have slowed everything down from the previous weeks of warm weather. DISTRICT 4 - WEST CENTRAL Producers are starting to top dress wheat. DISTRICT 5 - CENTRAL Small grains continue to look good. Heavy hay feeding to livestock continues. Hay in very short supply! Some producers topdressing small grains. We have experienced more than our normal share of cold weather. Hopefully, we'll see the demise of many of the insects that have plagued us as of late. Wet fields have slowed the start of nitrogen applications to small grains. Grain still showing signs of reddening and purpling due to cold weather. The cold weather has held back the growth of winter grazing fields. Cattlemen are feeding more than normal. DISTRICT 6 - EAST CENTRAL Cold weather has helped slow wheat crop but wet conditions have hampered fertilization leaving some fields looking yellow for lack of N. DISTRICT 7 - SOUTHWEST Wheat fields are yellowing. Purple foliage showing in many fields. Growers beginning to sidedress nitrogen applications. Soil moisture conditions being wet has delayed nitrogen applications on wheat and land preparations for the spring plantings. Growers just getting back into field. DISTRICT 8 - SOUTH CENTRAL Mowing cotton stalks, applying lime and poultry litter. Preparing land. Prescribe burning pine plantations. Wet soils but need more rain to fill up creeks and streams and build up subsoil moisture. But looking good. Top soil moisture good. We still need a lot of rain to fill ponds and creeks and bays to replenish from the recent droughts. Field work for early spring vegetables and row crops is beginning to be active on the farm front. Fertilizing (top dressing)of small grains is in full swing. It has been too wet to apply herbicides and topdressing to wheat. Cold weather has the wheat looking bad.
