Technical Abstract: Having accurate estimates of the cost of irrigation is important when making irrigation decisions. Estimates of fixed costs are critical for investment decisions. Operating cost estimates can assist in decisions regarding additional irrigations. This fact sheet examines the costs associated with owning and operating a well, pump and gearhead, power unit, and irrigation system. The analysis covers furrow, flood, border, non-towable center pivot and towable center pivot irrigation systems using a standard well. Flood, border, and furrow irrigation systems are further analyzed using a deep well and a stationary relift pump system. Ownership costs are addressed first. Next, operating costs are determined. Finally, total costs per acre are examined.
