Youth on board: Managing and delivering HIV/AIDS prevention programs to young people in Mozambique.

Issues: Mozambique is one of the most HIV infected countries in Africa. One of the factors that contributed to this situation was the delay of the Government response to it, the first case was identified in 1986 and the multisectoral response started 10 years later. This was also associated to myths and tabu at that time. Three ONGs AMODEFA, AVIMAS and NMCDS, have created hope to youth and all Mozambican, proposing a joint initiative with Government and UNFPA. Description: The first Youth nucleis wre established in Churches,Youth friendly services;Counselling Corners in School and out of schools;Firts TV programs tackling SRHAdvocacy teams,Advocated for the existence of the PNJCommuniy leaders groups (religious leaders, markets leaders, etc)Active envolvement in the process of conducting the first National Youth MeetingActive members of Youth International NetworksBrief description of the project, experience, service, research and/or advocacy; The project is a Nationwide initiative Provides Youth friendly Clinical service, Peer Education amoung youth Intervention In and Out of Schools There is Government and Non-Govermental Organizations working together Youth advocacy group were already created to deal with SRH issues Lessons learned: Programs conducted by Youth have more impact on other youth The Youth Programs enhance or give more acceptance of the NGOs image and work on their external environment including their relation with donnors; Multisectoral approach is more productive, with more impact and cost efective More capacity building can easily be provided working as networking Recommendations: Advocate for youth participation in Decision making Board, Drawing, imprementation and avaliation of programs (nothing for us without us) Peer education is more efective.
