Lloyd was active in the Quinault canoe club and made several ocean journeys along the pacific coast and Strait of Juan de Fuca. He was knowledgeable of the traditional ways of the Quinault culture and he shared that knowledge with hatchery visitors and tourists; especially children. Kid's Fishing Day at the hatchery was always a special annual event for Lloyd. He took pride in smoking salmon the traditional way over cedar wood in an open pit. In addition, he brought many smiles to young children's faces as he helped them learn to catch their first fish. Outside, adjacent to the hatchery's visitor center a memorial rock has been established in remebrance of Lloyd and Rhonda. Also in honor of Lloyd, a memorial plaque in his name has been placed at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's Fallen Comrades Memorial at the National Conservation Training Center (NCTC) in West Virginia. |
Lloyd Smith was an enrolled member of the Quinault Nation. Lloyd and his wife Rhonda are survived by two children. At the hatchery, Lloyd will always be remembered as a hard worker who was eager to satisfy his supervisors. At home, he always made his family a priority. His quiet demeanor and strong smile were recognizable traits by family and friends.
