My career with the National Archives began a little more than 9 years ago as a part-time employee at the Great Lakes Region Records Center located in Dayton, OH (Dayton).
Dayton is one of the National Archives' Federal Records Centers centrally located throughout the United States. At Dayton, we house retired records from Federal agencies located in Ohio, Indiana and Michigan, as well as selected Internal Revenue Service sites.
Having retired from the United States Air Force (1996) and awaiting an employment decision from the Aeronautical Systems Division (ASD), my days were filled with soap operas and golf, so you can imagine my relief when a manager at ASD asked me if I would be interested in a part-time position with the National Archives at Dayton.
After two months as an Archives Aide, my National Archives supervisor offered me a full-time position – I enjoyed the job tremendously and couldn't refuse the offer. My Air Force training and educational knowledge as well as the on-the-job training that I received at the National Archives enabled me to move up the career ladder into the supervisory position that I now hold.
As the Supervisory Archives Specialist to one of the three IRS teams, I am responsible for six IRS Service Centers. My team is responsible for providing reference services by searching, filing and interfiling records. In addition, I chair the Safety Committee and am the facilities contact for our building (the largest of the four Dayton buildings), where we house 1.2 million boxes of records.
Our customers (the public and other Federal agencies) deserve the best and I enjoy knowing that I play a part in making sure that they receive it.
