Fungal Genome Sequencing

The National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) has supported and currently supports a series of projects, led by the Broad Institute at MIT/Harvard, aimed at sequencing the genomes of a number of fungi. These fungi were proposed in three individual proposals submitted to NHGRI over the course of three years, consisting of the following sets of organisms.

Whitepaper proposals can be viewed by clicking on the group headings.

Fungal Genome Initiative I: (Submitted Feb. 2002)
Aspergillus nidulans
Coccidioides immitis
Coprinus cinereus
Cryptococcus neoformans,
Serotype A
Pneumocystis carinii (human and mouse pathogens)
Rhizopus oryzae
Ustilago maydis

Fungal Genome Initiative II: (Submitted June 2003)
Candida albicans
Candida tropicalis
Lodderomyces elongisporus
Saccharomyces cerevisiae RM11-1A

Fungal Genome Initiative III: (Submitted Oct. 2003)
Candida guilliermondii
Candida lusitaniae
Chaetomium globosum
Cryptococcus neoformans
Serotype B
Histoplasma capsulatum
Podospora anserina
Unicinocarpus reesei

Fungal Genome Initiative IV: (Submitted July 2004)
Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis
Schizosaccharomyces japonicus
Schizosaccharomyces octosporus

For each genome, 10-fold whole genome shotgun sequence coverage from paired-end reads will be obtained from plasmids (90 percent) and fosmids (10 percent). These sequence reads will be used to create a genome assembly.
