WASHINGTON – The Federal Election Commission (FEC) has designated Thomasenia (Tommie) Duncan to serve as Acting General Counsel beginning February 17, 2007.  Ms. Duncan, who is currently Associate General Counsel for General Law and Advice, will serve as Acting General Counsel while the Commission conducts an open search for a new General Counsel.

On January 16, General Counsel Lawrence H. Norton announced his intention to resign to enter private practice.

“We are grateful to Tommie for agreeing to serve as Acting General Counsel,” said Commission Chairman Robert Lenhard. “Tommie has great judgment and a strong legal mind.  We are very confident in her ability to lead the terrific team of lawyers we have in the Office of the General Counsel.”

Prior to joining the FEC in February of 2004, Ms. Duncan was General Counsel for America’s Promise – The Alliance for Youth.  She also has a distinguished career in government service.  She has worked as Senior Legal Advisor to the Administrator of the Federal Aviation Administration; General Counsel of the Corporation for National and Community Service; and Acting Deputy Solicitor and Special Assistant to the Solicitor of the U.S. Department of Labor.  She began the practice of law with the firm Covington and Burling LLP.

Ms. Duncan is a graduate of Brown University and the University of Pennsylvania Law School, and also attended Yale University Law School.
