Did You Know?  A 1781 committee report to the Continental Congress recommended the establishment of an Attorney General "to prosecute all suits on behalf of the United States.  To give his advice on all such matters as shall be referred to him by Congress."  (XXXIII Papers of the Continental Congress.)  It wasn't until President Washington signed the Judiciary Act of 1789 that the Office of the Attorney General was established in the United States.
