The map above shows the distribution of snowfall during the Blizzard of 1996 - January 6-8, 1996. The Wakefield County Warning area of responsibility was especially hit hard by the Blizzard of '96. The combination of storm force winds along the coast, a messy mix of precipitation over the interior southeast portion of the state and crippling blizzard-like conditions in the central Piedmont made this one of the worst storms to strike east-central Virginia within the past 30 years. This storm compares with the President's Day storm of February 18-19, 1979 and the Megapolitan snowstorm of February 10, 1983. Snowfall amounts over the Wakefield CWA ranged from several inches along the immediate coast at Virginia Beach to 26" in western Fluvanna County.
