Avery was like an uncle to his young cousin Minnie Wandell, and the two were quite close. When Avery retired, Wandell acted as his housekeeper in Nashville. In this letter, Avery briefly discusses his health, writing that several medical tests indicated that he was having difficulty with his thyroid. Subsequently, Avery would be diagnosed and treated for Graves' Disease.

Dear Minnie
I'm glad you had the trip to NY today--sorry you had such a difficult time calling me up, but I know you understand. I did not tell the operator because I fully expected to be back about eleven. This morning I was at the Medical Center at 8.30 sharp--"Do" went with me to Floor F (not the Harkness.) and I had a Basal done, then a blood count, then breakfast at Harkness--Orange juice, Egg and Bacon

Rolls, Coffee and Cream--$1.10 Go there and do likewise Friday--After that Dr. Palmer gave me a thorough physical--Heart and lung OK--in fact nothing wrong except the basal was a bit high (+22) and that together with my weight and slightly increased pulse suggests a bit too active a thyroid--but even that is only a tentative diagnosis. So that was very satisfactory--and something that can be taken care of very easily--Otherwise I'm feeling splendidly--I simply thought I ought to make sure there was nothing organic and there isn't.
