Abstract: Olomana School, operated by the Hawaiian Department of Education, serves youths who have been placed in the Hawaii Youth Correctional Facility (HYCF), the Hawaii State Hospital (HSH), and the Detention Home (DH). During the 1988 summer semester, Olomana School implemented the Extended School Year Program; the school day was expanded to six periods and the semester was extended from 6 to 8 weeks. In addition to these changes, the HYCF and the DH altered their curriculum and teaching formats. This report evaluates the effects of the program on the goals and objectives of Olomana School, the academic achievement of students at the school, the quality of student services, the school's linkages to other agencies, and staff and student satisfaction. Recommendations based on the results of the evaluation include: (1) continuing the Extended School Year Program; (2) adding further activities designed to develop occupational skills and to enhance self-esteem; (3) reconsidering the policy of awarding core course credit for integrated program work; and (4) evaluating the program as it evolves. Appended are HYCF team descriptions, an HYCF listing of afternoon courses, an HSH listing of courses, and the evaluation strategy.
