Comments or interesting anecdotes about the event:
We did two programs at Lenape Valley Swim Club on Aug. 1, 2006. This was one of the hottest days of the summer, with the temperature topping out at near 100 degrees - a swim club was a great place to be on a day like this!
Beginning at 4:00 PM we did a Solar program using a PST and talked about the Sun. Occasionally the Sun went behind a cloud, which was a perfect time to talk about "Why We Put Telescopes in Space". This activity was attended by about 35-40 children and adults.
At 8:00 PM we returned to the Swim Club to do primarily a Lunar program. We picked this night specifically because of a close pairing of Jupiter and the moon. As folks viewed the moon for a while, we then turned to looking at Jupiter and talking about planets. We took a break from viewing to present parts of the Planetary kit that delt with the Search for Distant Worlds. We presented how the search is currently being conducted and NASA's future missions (TPF and SIM). We passed out the Star Maps and explained how to use them and how to locate the stars which have extrasolar planets around them. We also passed out the Treasure Maps and explaned their use.
The night was very humid and the site not especially dark. But, it was fine for the moon and Jupiter. As the evening pressed on, it did become dark enough for a brief tour of a few constellations and the brighter stars of the summer sky. Everyone seemed to have a great time and we were invited back for a presentation next summer.
