Statement of Significance (as of designation - December 2, 1974):
Located in a busy port, this four story Customhouse was a major one. Begun in 1848 and completed in 1881, it was second only to the U.S. Capitol in size among American buildings when built. Its General Business Room is a Greek Revival interior of originality and monumentality.

Hurricane Katrina did damage to the roof, windows, and caused water damage on all four floors.
