Statement of Significance (as of designation - December 8, 1976):
Constructed in 1900-07, this is an outstanding example of the use of Beaux-Arts elements in a government structure, and one of Cass Gilbert's finest buildings. Embellished with sculpture by Daniel Chester French and murals by Reginald Marsh.

Condition:
The General Services Administration owns the building, and has recently put $40 million into renovation of the building's exterior and systems, and brought the building up to life safety and ADA requirements. They have also had interior surfaces including the murals restored. The building is currently rented to the Smithsonian Institution and Bankruptcy Courts.

Interior alterations by the Smithsonian Institution for their Museum of the American Indian have been completed. No further alterations are anticipated.
