OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the incidence and kind of bacterial diseases in hospitalized HIV-patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 2164 HIV patients admitted in our hospital for 56 months (August, 1989-March, 1994). RESULTS: We found 845 bacterial diseases (845/2164=39.4%) with the following kinds: 1) Pneumonia with/without empyema 294; 2) Endocarditis 144; 3) Respiratory infections 102; 4) Bacteremia with/without shock 73; 5) Cellulitis, subcutaneous abscesses and phlebitis 66; 6) Urinary tract infections 36 (8 of them: acute pyelonephritis); 7) Sinusitis 35; 8) Gastro-intestinal infections 20: 9) Cholangitis/cholecystitis 17; 10) Arthritis 10; 11) Sexually transmitted diseases 10 (pelvic inflammatory disease 6, syphilis 3, urethritis 1); 12) Otitis 9; 13) Peritonitis 7; 14) Lung abscess 6; 15) Perianal abscess 4; 16) Myositis 3; 17) Others 9 (epididymitis 2, meningitis 1, osteomyelitis 1, perirectal abscess 1, myocardial abscess 1, chondritis 1, panophthalmitis 1, pericarditis 1). Mycobacteria were excluded. CONCLUSIONS: 1) Bacterial diseases are common in hospitalized HIV-patients. 2) Pneumonia is the most frequent infection. 3) Endocarditis and other infections, such as cellulitis and subcutaneous abscesses, are common in areas with a high prevalence of IVDU.
