INTRODUCTION.- Non-typhoidal Salmonella bacteremia are frequent in HIV-patients. Localized infection has been reported in numerous places; nevertheless, these metastasec infection have rarely been described in AIDS-patient. OBJECTIVE.- To report a case of chondritis due to Salmonella enteritidis in a patient with AIDS. Case.- A 33-year-old man with heterosexual HIV infection was admitted to the hospital because of irregular fever, diarrhoea, and weight loss. He was well until three months earlier. On physical examination, he had noninflammatory tumor in the right sixth chondrosternal joint. A CT scan revealed chondritis and a Gallium 67 scanning was positive. Salmonella enteritidis grew in blood cultures and in a sample obtained by puncture of the tumor; the stool culture was negative. The patient was treated with ciprofloxacin for 8 weeks, and he remained asymptomatic. A new Gallium 67 was negative. CONCLUSION.- To our knowledge, this is the first case of a chondritis secondary a Salmonella enteritidis bacteremia, although there are other communicated cases of metatasic focus by non-typhoidal salmonella in the literature. Localized infection should be considered in HIV patients with Salmonella bacteremia.
