CATALOGING POLICY AND SUPPORT OFFICE
SUMMARY OF DECISIONS, EDITORIAL MEETING NUMBER 39
September 27, 2006
Present from CPSO: P. Weiss, B. Bellinger, R. Goudreau, D. Thompson
CLASSIFICATION
Changes were made as indicated on the approved list.
SUBJECT HEADINGS
Subdivisions to be added to lists of free-floating subdivisions:
H 1095
$x Web-based instruction (May Subd Geog)
H 1147, Animals
$x Larvae $x Food (May Subd Geog)
$x Mercury content (May Subd Geog)
H 1180, Plants & crops
$x Age determination (May Subd Geog)
Other decisions:
Canine distemper virus as a biological pest control agent
A work on a specific virus as a biological
pest control agent should be assigned the heading Viral pesticides
and an additional heading to bring out the specific virus, rather than
pre-coordinating both of these elements in a single heading. The
proposal was not approved.
Great Britain--History--Union, 1707
A heading for this event already exists in
the form Scotland--History--Union, 1707. It is not
standard practice to have more than one heading to represent the same
event. The proposal was therefore not approved. Instead, UF
Anglo-Scottish Union, 1707; UF British Union of 1707;
UF Union of England and Wales with Scotland, 1707;
and UF Great Britain--History--Union, 1707, were all
added to the existing heading.
Security policy (National security
Headings for government policy on a specific
topic are constructed by using the free-floating subdivision
--Government policy under the heading for the topic.
However, H 1642, sec. 1, specifies that the subdivision is not used
under topics that are inherently governmental in nature. The
unsubdivided heading is used instead. Since national security is an
inherently governmental activity, the heading National security,
without the subdivision --Government policy, is used for
national security policy. The proposal was not approved. References
were added to the heading National security to clarify
that this heading is used for national security policy.
