Title:  Managing Stress and Anxiety with Qigong Meditation

Description:  Qigong is part of traditional Chinese health-preservation practice, characterized by the psychosomatic maneuvering technique or skills that integrate breathing, mind and body into oneness. Most qigong forms combine body relaxation, deep breathing, guided imagery, visualization, biofeedback, meditation and mindfulness training into one exercise, and have profound therapeutic effect on managing stress and reducing anxiety. This presentation will offer a brief overview on what is Qigong, what research evidences are on Qigong exercise for stress management, what the possible mechanism would be on how qigong meditation helps managing stress and anxiety, and some basic qigong meditation techniques the audience can use in everyday life.

Brief Introduction to the Speaker:
Dr. Kevin W Chen is an associate professor at the Center for Integrative Medicine, University of Maryland School of Medicine. He is a NIH-funded investigator in clinical studies of Qigong therapy for arthritis and addiction. With Chinese origin and long-time qigong practice Dr. Chen is a certified Qigong instructor, and is among the few scientists who have both fundamental knowledge of Qigong and active involvement in qigong research in the U.S. His research includes both verification of bio-energy therapy through laboratory detectors, and medical applications of bio-energy therapies like qigong in clinical settings. He is currently working on NIH- and foundation-funded research projects to apply Qigong therapy and self-care methods in treatment of addiction, arthritis, anxiety disorder, fibromyalgia, cancer and other health conditions.
