THE DESIGN AND COMPUTATION MANAGER

The Design and Computation Manager (D&C Manager) has become a very integral part of the design process. Several common uses are shown below:
Historically..... the D&C Manager has been used mostly for drawing chains, chain stationing, and profiles graphically to agency drafting standards.  Below is a condensed explanation of how the tool can be setup and used.

Invoke the Design and Computation Manager by using the MicroStation pull downs:

APPLICATIONS > GEOPAK ROAD > DESIGN & COMPUTATION MANAGER ... or from the Road Tools icon as shown below:

Set the path in the "Design & Computation Manager" to one of the following:

.X21 Generation of Criteria files/Level Libraries:
F:\V8_Resource\X_21\Standards\DDBS\Metric
F:\V8_Resource\X_21\Standards\DDBS\English
.X30 Generation of Criteria files/Level Libraries:
F:\V8_Resource\X_30\Standards\DDBS\Metric
F:\V8_Resource\X_30\Standards\DDBS\English

If this is not the displayed path, then change it, as follows...

The D&C Manager (shown above in "Dialog Mode") now has another look, known as the "Toolbox Mode".  The "Toolbox Mode" can be accessed by pressing the first icon (shown below) on the D&C Manager dialog.

The "Toolbox Mode" dialog is shown below.  I'll explain a little more about this later....

To get back to the "Dialog Mode", click on the far right icon as shown below:

Since we've already talked about how to use D&C Manager for drawing chains, chain stationing and profiles, this section will be focused on using it for extracting Plan quantities... thus the "Computation" portion of it's title.

Entering Custom "pay items" and calculating quantities... (a brief explanation)...

The Design and Computation Manager does much more than we typically use it for.   In addition to drawing your horizontal and vertical alignments it can perform lightening fast computations for you...thus the name Design and Computation Manager.   These Ddb files are currently password protected. If you would like a copy without the password protection for your own customized use, please come see me and I'll set you up.

This example and the following dialog boxes below will illustrate setting up a Category called 63401 and an Item called 63401, Pavement markings, type k, broken yellow.   This is a Metric pay item and will be measured by the linear meter.

To create a new category for your pay items...select the Preferences icon and click on New Category, as shown below:

This category and all of it's pay items can be moved later using the move option available under the Edit pull down.   When you click on New Category a small dialog box will appear.   Simply key-in the name of the desired category and click on OK.

When finished...click on the Create A New Item icon, as shown below:

This brings up the Item Create dialog box, as shown below:

Set the combo button to Compute Parameter.

Key-in the Item ID and Description.

Double click the box to the right of "Placement" and adjust the element symbology as desired.

Key-in an Attribute name (something that relates to the item), this will be used later for differentiating between items placed with the D&C Manager.  Set the Class to Primary.  Click the Compute Parameters setting ON.   Now, click on the Compute Parameters push button.

This brings up the Parameters for Target Item dialog, as shown below.

Under Computation Method, set the combo box to Standard Unit.

Click on the browse icon at the right of the Standard Unit window and browse to the desired Standard Unit, (shown above as M1 or Linear Meters). Double click on the Standard Unit (M1) on the Metric Units dialog and that Item will populate the Parameters for Target Item dialog.

Set the Rounding field appropriately:

Set the Quantity Factor field to 1.0, (usually).   If for some reason you wanted the quantity to be 15% more than the actual, a Quantity Factor of 1.15 would be keyed- in.

The Quantity Deduction field would be used (for example) to deduct concrete drop inlet lengths from a continuous run of curb and gutter.

To date...I have not explored the remainder of the fields.   When finished...Press OK.

NEXT...HOW TO COMPUTE THE QUANTITY:

Close out of all these dialog boxes and go back to the main D&C Manager dialog box.   Select the Compute icon, as shown above.

Select 634010050 Pavement markings, type B, broken yellow and double click on it.   Notice how the item gets added to the collection window at the bottom of the dialog. You could add other items (by double clicking them) and compute them concurrently.   For this example, we are computing only one pay item.   Toggle the "Compute" push button to Comp Book or Item Report.   This example will attempt to find and calculate all elements with the Attribute for the item 63401, Pavement markings, type k, broken yellow.

NOTE:  To remove an Item from the collection box, simply double click on it (in the collection box).  To clear the entire collection box of all collected items, click on the Clear Collection icon shown below.

The Compute portion of this tool has been completely rewritten for Geopak 2004 Edition and is extremely flexible now. It's also quite a bit more complicated to explain all the features and options. For a detailed explanation, please see the Geopak Help files on this tool.

TIP: An easy way to access Help for a particular tool is to assign "Help" to one of your Function Keys, (such as F1), click on the dialog, (in this case Plan Quantity Computation) and press the function key, (in this case F1).

Since we have selected the Extent Active Design File, the software will look in the entire design file.   As mentioned above, there are many options for what "Extents" to consider. Other Extents are shown below:

Once again, for this example we are using Active Design File for our "Extent".

The only required fields to complete when using Active Design File are shown below. Click on Compute Quantities:

The Computation Results dialog will appear as shown below:

The displayed results contained within the Computation Results dialog are a result of the previously "collected" items to be computed. In the case of computing multiple pay items and one or more of the displayed quantities is to be excluded from the report (reports are explained next), simply uncheck the Export check box.

There are many types of Export Formats and as explained earlier, the Geopak Help files go into detail on all the various types. In Western Federal Lands, we typically use only 2 of the Export Formats:

To create an Item Report of the collected pay items, complete the dialog similar to one shown below and click on Export:

The Item Report results are shown below:

THE "PLACE INFLUENCE" TOGGLE:

When the Place Influence tool is inactive (unchecked), MicroStation commands draw and copy elements at the active MicroStation level/symbology.   However, when the Place Influence toggle is checked...any element placement or copy function will draw elements at the element symbology and attributes associated with the selected item from the Design and Computation Manager.

In the example dialog box above, I've selected 617011250 Guardrail system G4, type 2, class A (wood posts) as the element to draw in my plan view.   I also have Place Influence "checked".   From this point on...ALL element placement and copy functions will automatically be drawn exactly to the symbologies previously set up for 617011250 Guardrail system G4, type 2, class A (wood posts), no matter what my MicroStation element symbologies are set to.   When I "uncheck" Place Influence, all element placement and copy functions will be drawn to the active MicroStation element symbologies.

If the Adhoc Attributes toggle is on, any adhoc attributes stored with the item are applied to the Place Influenced element. If the Adhoc Attributes toggle is off, the element symbology of the Item is utilized, but no adhoc attributes are assigned or modified.

The New Element Only option fixes the old problem where if an original element that was copied, it would also get changed to the same symbology as the new Place Influenced element.

When the New Element Only is toggled off, the Place Influence is applied to any selected element, including the original element. If toggled on, only elements being placed utilize the Place Influence. Any other selected element retains its original symbology.

THE "MATCH POINT TEXT" TOGGLE:

The Match Point Text tool is similar to the Place Influence tool, with one major difference.   When selected...it not only places text to the attributes already set up in the D&C Manager for stored points, but it also changes the text attributes in MicroStation.

THE "DRAW COGO ELEMENT" PUSH BUTTON:

This is the one that you all should be familiar with.   It's most commonly used to draw horizontal and vertical alignments.

THE "SET" MODE:

This mode is used to change the attributes and symbologies of an element that was previously drawn to the attributes of another D&C Manager item, eliminating the need to redraw an element(s) from scratch.

To change (Set) a previously drawn element to the symbologies and attribute of a D&C Manager item:

To change (Set) a previously drawn element to the symbologies, attribute and Adhoc Attributes of a D&C Manager item:

To change (Set) multiple elements all at once:

THE " DISPLAY" MODE:

This mode can be used to display pay items four different ways.

Normal Display:
Actually does nothing more than set the display back to normal if you have previously selected one of the following 3 display options.

Highlight Selection:
Select a pay item, click on Add and click on the Highlight icon.   All elements that correspond to the attributes associated with the items displayed under Collection will be highlighted.

Hide Selection:
Select a pay item, click on Add and click on the Hide icon.   All elements that correspond to the attributes associated with the items displayed under Collection will be invisible.

Display Only Selection:
Select a pay item, click on Add and click on the Only icon.   Only elements that correspond to the attributes associated with the items displayed under Collection will be displayed.

The D&C Manager also has a Shape Mode, (icon shown below):

... and a Pavement Marking Mode, (icon shown below) but are not commonly used in WFLHD.  For an explanation of how the Passing Sight Distance application (written for FHWA) works, please click here.

Once again, for more detailed instructions on all the various use for the D & C Manager....please see the Geopak Help files.   These instructions just cover the basics.
