Summary
The Ren? Martineau Insectarium, which was officially opened in 1999, is more like a library than a museum. All specimens are catalogued on cards indicating their location on the premises, along with the place where they were collected, the date, conditions, and so on. The collection includes mostly coverage from Quebec. The Insectarium therefore serves as ... a historical and ecological reference centre. The Ren? Martineau Insectarium contains some 200,000 specimens, primarily forest insects, including: 2000 species of Coleoptera, 1158 species of Lepidoptera, 1584 species of Hymenoptera (1143 ichneumon species), 146 species of Homoptera, 146 species of Heteroptera, and, 108 species of Collembola. In addition the Insectarium has Odonata, Blattodea, Orthoptera, Dermaptera and one species of Mantodea (preying mantis). The Insectarium also contains a unique collection of 40,000 slides of over 900 species. Published catalogue information covers reference data from 1930 to 1988. Work continues on preparing post-1988 reference material for publication. The Ren? Martineau Insectarium welcomes scientists, taxonomists, representatives from government and universities, as well as amateur researchers. Dedicated to identifying, comparing and validating specimens collected during research projects on insect biodiversity in the forest environment.
