Statement of Significance (as of designation - June 23, 1965):
Unique as the site of both religiously and secularly inspired utopian communities, New Harmony was founded by the Rappites in 1815; in 1825, the village was purchased by Robert Owen (1771-1858), who attempted to establish a happy and productive communal group here. About 35 of the original 180 Rappite buildings remain.

Condition:
Wabash River continues to erode the northern & western boundaries of the town. Corps of Engineers constructed a rock/riprap wall along southern bank. Growth in area continues to threaten district. Voluntary ban on new construction lifted but no protective measures are in place. Possible closing/demolition of the White County Bridge, which connects New Harmony with Crossville, IL.

NPS and SHPO revised original NHL nomination. MWRO plans to revisit the NHL, determine boundary, and which resources have been relocated.
