Ruby Mountain Interagency Hotshot Crew

Ruby Mountain Hot Shot SymbolThe Ruby Mountain Interagency Hotshot Crew (IHC) is looking for qualified, highly motivated, physically fit personnel to join our elite fire fighting team. The 2008 Fire Season was our eighth season as an established Hotshot Crew. Eight years in which we have built a foundation of high standards. There was a strong core of returning personnel for the 2008 season. We expect the same for 2009. However, there will be a few positions open for the 2009 season both permanent and seasonal.

Interested applicants should apply by clicking on the Applying for Jobs with BLM Nevada Fire and Aviation.  We will begin hiring Seasonal employees the third week of January 2009.  Those interested in permanent positions or needing further assistance should call 775-738-4668.

The 2008 fire season was considered to be a success by all. The crew became available for fire assignments on May 18th and traveled to New Mexico for a 30 day detail. Throughout the season the crew was assigned to fourteen fires in five different states.

The Elko District as well as the Ruby Mountain Hotshots, maintain an aggressive training program in the pre-season. Some of the courses presented to Elko fire personnel in the past were S-230, I-200, S-211, S-212, S-260, S-217, S-234, S-232, L-280, S-131, S-133, S-215. We plan to present an equal amount of training in the years to come.

The Ruby Mountain Hotshots will have permanent barracks, training facilities, crew area, as well as other amenities in the future. For the 2009 season housing will be provided to crew members from outside the local area. In 2009 the housing fee will be approximately $70 per pay period. The rate will be comparable to the 2008 season. For 2008, the training facilities and crew area were provided by the Elko Fire Department and will be utilized again for 2009.

All personnel who participate on Type I Interagency Hotshot Crew (IHC) assignments must meet the fitness standards listed below. Personnel must meet all standards during the same attempt. Meeting the standards established is a condition of continued employment. Failure to meet the standards may result in reassignment to a less arduous position, if available, or separation.

The job of a hotshot is very demanding both physically and mentally, it requires stamina from all individuals. In order to enjoy the job, as well as to be an asset not a liability to the crew it will benefit you greatly to take your physical preparation seriously. In addition, the more you prepare the less likely you are to become injured during the fire season. The two weeks of physical training is designed to push you and to enhance your fitness level. Don’t count on getting in shape once you start, that’s too late. It takes weeks of hard work to get to the level of where you need to be.

As part of an elite fire fighting team, your ability to perform arduous labor is critical to crew morale, health, and above all safety. Therefore, RMHS requires not only that you pass the minimum acceptable performance standards, also that you strive to meet our goals.
