EDUCATION: Graduated from Troy High School, Troy, Ohio, in 1977; received a bachelor of arts degree in biological science from Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio, in 1980, and a master of science degree in safety engineering from the University of Southern California in 1985. EXPERIENCE: Sherlock graduated with honors from Ohio State University in June 1980. Prior to entering on active duty with the United States Army, she was a Neuropathology Research Assistant at the Ohio State University College of Medicine. She was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in Air Defense Artillery in July 1981. After completion of the Air Defense Officer Basic Course, she attended the United States Army Aviation School. She was then assigned to Fort Rucker, Alabama as a US-1H Instructor Pilot and served as a Section Leader, Platoon Leader, and Brigade Flight Standardization Officer. While at Fort Rucker, she was also designated as a Standardization Instructor Pilot for all phases of rotary wing flight, including combat skills and night vision goggle operations. She also completed the Aviation Officer Advanced Course, the Combined Arms Services Staff School, and the Fixed Wing Multi-Engine Qualification Course. A Senior Army Aviator, she has logged 2,700 flying hours in 9 different rotary wing and fixed wing aircraft. NASA EXPERIENCE: Sherlock was assigned to NASA Johnson Space Center in September 1987 as a flight simulation engineer on the Shuttle Training Aircraft, a complex airborne simulator which models flight characteristics of the orbiter. Responsibilities included developing and directing engineering flight tests. Selected by NASA in January 1990, Sherlock became an astronaut in July 1991. She is qualified for assignment as a mission specialist on future Space Shuttle flight crews. Her technical assignments to date include work on crew equipment issues for the Astronaut Office Mission Development Branch. CURRENT ASSIGNMENT: Sherlock is assigned as a mission specialist on the crew of STS-57, which will carry the commercial middeck augmentation module called SPACEHAB and retrieve the European Retrievable Carrier (EURECA).
