DeGette: Energy Bill Fails American Consumers

WASHINGTON, DCU.S Representative Diana DeGette (D-CO), a member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, strongly criticized the so-called "Gasoline for America's Security Act of 2005," H.R. 3893. After appearing to be headed for defeat, the bill passed the House today by the narrowest of margins, 212-210. Republican leadership was successful only after holding the vote open for an unusual 40 minutes in an effort to browbeat GOP members who originally opposed the proposal.

"Americans are smarter than this Congress thinks they are. They understand that plan the Republicans pushed through today provides no way to reduce gas prices and has no connection to hurricanes," said Rep. DeGette. "There will be a huge outcry when the public finds out that, instead of saving money or reducing energy prices, their tax dollars are going to refineries whose profits went up 255 percent last year."

The Republicans' energy bill, which was rushed through the U.S. House of Representatives in little over a week, provides taxpayer incentives for refinery construction. It also eliminates many of the clean air protections that allowed neighborhoods to keep refineries away from residential areas. In addition, the plan does nothing to reduce near-record gas prices and fails to significantly address price gouging.

"To really keep the costs down for Americans already struggling with higher prices, we're going to have to address price gouging, encourage renewable energy and efficiency, and stop giving these taxpayer-funded sops to industry. I know my constituents expect nothing less from me. That's what I fought for when we first considered this worthless proposal and that is what I will continue to fight for," said Rep.DeGette.
