Subject: Change to SBUV/2 NOAA-16 Processing Options on AIX - Issued: 15 Aug Topic: Change to SBUV/2 NOAA-16 Processing Options on AIX Satellite(s) Involved: NOAA-16 Instrument(s) Involved: SBUV/2 Product(s) Involved/Affected: SBUV/2 Total and Profile Ozone distributed via daily and orbital Product Master File (PMF) in Binary and BUFR format. Date/Time(UTC) of Initial Implementation: 14 Aug 2006, 1400 UTC Contact Person(s) Name/Email/Phone Number for Questions: Donna.McNamara@noaa.gov 301-763-8142 ext. 145 Web site(s) that contain other relevant information (where applicable): http://www.osdpd.noaa.gov/PSB/OZONE/OZONE.html Details/Specifics of Change: In order to better match the N16 results of our research partners in NESDIS/STAR and NASA/GSFC, we have modified our processing options to use 252 nm in our profile ozone calculations. Several years ago, we removed this channel due to noise problems. The noise has decreased. The affects of this change are small, but in nearly all cases/levels, bring the N16 results closer to the N17 results. The overall change to the column is on the order of a few dobson units, with the changes greatest in the highest layers above 8 mb. (I can provide comparison plots to users upon request.) This change WAS NOT made on the CEMSCS version of our product. Users are advised to begin using the AIX version of our products as soon as possible. It is the superior product. Donna -- Donna P.
