AHEPA Memorial to Marshall

June 30, 2008

On June 30, Ambassador Speckhard addressed the 86th Supreme Convention of the American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association (AHEPA) at a wreath-laying ceremony in front of the Embassy’s statue of George C. Marshall.  The Ambassador thanked AHEPA for donating the statue in 2000, and spoke about the critical impact the Marshall Plan had on the post-World War II recovery of Europe.  “It is up to us to keep Marshall’s legacy alive,” he told the visiting Greek Americans.

The procession continued to the Ambassador’s Residence, Jefferson House, and then to the statue in honor of Greek-Americans who died in the 1821 Greek War of Independence.  Ambassador Speckhard laid a wreath at this ceremony as well.  AHEPA, led by Supreme President Ike Gulas, also left wreaths at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Syntagma, the Truman statue on Leoforos Konstantinou, and the OSS Memorial in Goudi.
