Federal Trade Commission Received Documents July 17, 1995 B18354900210 July 14, 1995 FTC Office of the Secretary "Made in the USA" 6th St and Pennsylvania Ave. N.W. Washington, D.C. 20580 Re: Made in the USA I read USA Today's story about New Balance shoes and your request for comments on what "made in the USA" means, or should mean. When a product label says "Made in the USA" or "Made in "America" I assume that most of the product is American and that at least the final assembly was done here. The fact that their soles are made in China doesn't alter the fact that the shoe is assembled, or made, in America. I can't comment on their ads implying that all their shoes are made in America when some are not because I, frankly don't recall seeing the ads. It doesn't take a lot of common sense to know that you should judge a product on the product itself, not what you see in an advertisement. What happened to "caveat emptor" or "buyer beware"? People should think for themselves when they are shopping and stop swallowing ad campaigns hook line and sinker.
