I followed the instructions given in the Basins tutorial for downloading HSPEXP. Because I am using Windows XP I downloaded HSPEXP 2.4 to the C:\Basins\models\HSPEXP subfolder. I specified the Time series required by HSPEXP in the project WDM file for the Hydrologic Calibration of the specified reach. From the start menu- programs-usgs- HSPEXP I ran the software. I created the basin specification file *.exs for my project watershed, specifying project WDM as input. I named the *.exs file the same name as for my project UCI file and saved it. It was saved in the user subfolder of the C:\Basins\models\HSPEXP , now for the HSPEXP to run the UCI, WDM and EXS files should be in the sam efolder according to the tutorial. I copied the WDM and UCI files to the user folder and tried to open the project . The program did not open it. I copied the batch and exe files to the project folder and started the program there as is the case for the tutorial case study project. I created the exs file for my project and saved it. It was saved in the project folder. However when i tried to open the uci and exs files the program gives a message " The specified file is not a valid HSPF UCI file. see File error.fil for more information". This specified file "Error.fil" is an empty file. I tried to save the exs file with a different name but then it is saved with an empty uci file and again I am unable to open the project. I tried different combinations but I am unable to reopen the exs file that i create. Can somebody help? I am working with AVSWAT-X2005 and have successfully auto-calibrated my model and, although I realize that I can change the parameters of the original model by editing each HRU, is there an easier way to make these changes, especially for parameters such as sol_z or sol_AWC that both seem to have many, many changes. Also, I am having trouble finding the new values for both of these parameters in the calibration folder. First, note that pestchek is spelled without a "c" - it is an eight letter named executable (long story there!). If this does not solve the problem, and your path variable is for some reason not finding the PEST folders and utilities, try downloading the latest PEST from www.sspa.com/pest, unzipping, and getting the latest copy of pestchek, to place in your run directory. That should solve problem #1. For problem #2, it sounds like the model is not executing. Possibly, this is because of a convergence issue, but more likely there is a problem with the set up of the PEST files and/or model batch file that PEST executes, so the model is not running, and the output file that PEST is expecting is therefore not present. Check the run directory for the PST file, and the BATCH file that PEST is attempting to execute, and then step through the sequence of executables in that BATCH file, to see if each executes without difficulty. I expect you will find that one or more of them does not, for some reason. Regards - Matt Matt Tonkin S.S. Try running your simulation directly from the DOS prompt using XHSPFX (the DOS executable HSPF used by PEST). You will need to have a ".sup" file to feed to it, hopefully you can make one manually if PEST did not create one. Once XHSPFX runs, take a look at your ".ech" files to see if there are any errors. For example, just this week I had a problem similar to yours- I did my calibrations for 10 years then tried a 50 year simulation. The supplementary file ".sup" contained the calibrated parameters from the 10 year PEST calibration. So to run a 50 year simulation I extended the date range in the UCI and ran XHSPFX, feeding it the UCI and the ".sup" file. Problem- I had not prepared my WDM files for record lengths of 50 years, they had all been set up for the 10 year calibration. So XHSPFX tanked on me, but by exploring the echo file I saw the error was due to problems with the WDM- and of course, no model.out file had been created. Once I tweaked the WDM it worked like a charm. Point is- sometimes there are minor problems with the UCI/HSPF that can cause TSPROC and PEST to tank, so check to make sure your UCI file is OK and works with a ".sup" file, any problems here will prevent creation of the model.out file(s). Hope this helps and Good luck!
