Summary
Abstract: The Seabird Ecological Assessment Network coordinates a beached bird monitoring effort. The line segments represent the estimated beach segments monitored by SEANET volunteers. There are tabular records for each monitoring visit to a beach. Data collected include observations of beach conditions, beached birds found, and live birds observed. When possible ... the beached birds are examined by trained technicians to determine pathological findings which could indicate cause of death. Linked to these beach segments are the associated data tables: SEANET mortality, SEANET beach conditions, SEANET beached birds, and SEANET live birds, which can be joined to this data layer. The data currently posted were collected from October 2002 through 2004. Monitoring efforts and data collection are ongoing and the database will be updated quarterly. Purpose: SEANET Beached Bird Survey Data are used by seabird researchers, conservation managers, and analysts to identify areas of high seabird mortality. Threats to seabirds are determined through observations and pathological findings. There is potential for using seabirds as indicators of coastal and marine health. Locations are accurate to either the NOS80K: Medium Resolution Digital Vector U.S. Shoreline or the recorded volunteer location with a handheld GPS. Attribute data are collected by volunteer/citizen science effort and quality control is performed (through deductive estimate). No quantification assessment has been performed. All beaches monitored from October 2002- December 2004 are mapped.
