Omaha, Neb -- July 27, 2008 -- Al Marconi, a disabled Navy veteran from Perris, Calif., is competing in the 28th National Veterans Wheelchair Games, being held through July 29 in Omaha, Nebraska.  Attracting nearly 500 athletes each year, the National Veterans Wheelchair Games is the largest annual wheelchair sports event in the world. It is a multi-event sports and rehabilitation program for military service veterans who use wheelchairs for sports competition due to spinal cord injuries, amputations, or certain neurological problems.  Marconi, 63, a combat veteran of Vietnam, had a head injury. He is currently receiving care at the VA medical facility in Loma Linda, Calif.

Marconi is competing in the following events:

 archery (para/amp with compound bow)
air guns (para)

"This will be my very first time in the Games," said Marconi. "I was encouraged to attend by my physical therapist as part of my treatment for my illness. I am very excited to come to Nebraska."

Athletes in the Games compete within three divisions -- Masters (over age 40), Novice (first-time competitors in the Games), and Open (all others, or those who chose to compete in this category). They also compete within classes according to the level of their physical ability, with three quadriplegic-level classes (IA, IB, and IC), and four paraplegic-level or amputee classes (II, III, IV, and V). Marconi competes as a Class IV in the Novice division.

The Games are presented by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and the Paralyzed Veterans of America (PVA), and are hosted this year by the VA Nebraska-Western Iowa Health Care System (VA NWIHCS) and the Great Plains Chapter of the Paralyzed Veterans of America. Funded with help from a host of corporations and service organizations, the National Veterans Wheelchair Games are a showcase for the benefit of sports rehabilitative programs, and the remarkable athletic abilities and personal achievements of our nation's disabled veterans.
