characteristics of their chaetae (those with hair and pectinate chaetae like T. tubifex and those with bifid chaetae). Immatures were allocated to species according to adult proportions as in Zendt and Bergersen (2000). The density of T. tubifex (all identified T. tubifex and immatures allocated to this species) was calculated by dividing the number by the surface area of the core. A two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) with side channels and time of the year as factors, followed by the Tukey procedure for pairwise comparisons, was used to determine if mean densities of T. tubifex differed among side channels and times of year (SAS 19992000). The T. tubifex density estimates were ln (x + 1) transformed to achieve normality and stabilize variances.
