U.S. Naval Academy Was Formed
October 10, 1845
If you want to be a doctor or a lawyer when you get older, you need to attend a special school after college. But what if you want to be in the U.S. military? It isn't required that persons in the military go to a special school, but many of them do, especially if they want to be an officer. You probably know that there are four different branches of the U.S. military: the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marines. On October 10, 1845, President James Polk formed a special school to train officers for the Navy, the U.S. Naval School in Annapolis, Maryland. Five years later, the school was renamed the U.S. Naval Academy.
