By tapping into Y‑12's security know how and unique manufacturing capabilities, Y‑12's National Security Technology Center can turn your security concept into a reality.

Our scientists, engineers and other security experts work with you on the front end to understand your needs and desired outcomes then go to work to identify the best solution to meet or to hopefully exceed your expectations.

When a new technology is needed, Y‑12's National Security Technology Center works quickly to move that vision to prototype and then to final product.

Our Work Speaks Volumes

Since its establishment in 2005 to support our country's homeland security needs, Y‑12's National Security Technology Center has achieved notable successes in the design and development of innovative devices with wideranging national security applications.

Examples include

  • the Chemical Agent Detector/Interrogator — a true breakthrough that allows law enforcement to safely and easily detect chemicals such as ammonia;
  • hydrogen sulfide;
  • alcohol, toluene, xylene and other volatile organic vapors;
  • Freon;
  • propane;
  • methane;
  • typical combustible gas;
  • gasoline and diesel exhaust;
  • carbon dioxide; and
  • ether.
The gun‑like device is lightweight and has a powered sampling system.

Another technology, the SysChip™, reduces the physical size of the metal detector's electronic circuitry to a 40‑pin Dual In‑line Package size of approximately 2 in. by 5/8 in. (a little smaller than a pack of gum) with a configuration to match a 40‑pin integrated circuit socket. More advanced models are being developed for detecting gases and radiation.
