BOND: SHOULDER SURGERY PUTS PITCHING CAREER ON HOLD

February 22, 2008

WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Senator Kit Bond was saddened to announce today that he will be unavailable for pitching relief for the Cardinals this season as a result of the shoulder surgery he underwent at Bethesda Naval Hospital.

While today’s surgery, known as Reverse Total Shoulder Arthroplasty, was successful and he expects to be back to work next week, Bond joked that his pitching prospects are even further limited.

“The Cardinals will have to wait ‘til next year,” said Bond, who was in high spirits after the surgery.

In May of last year, Senator Bond’s morning walk was cut short by an inattentive driver rounding a street corner.  At the time, Bond, who was at work later that day, quipped that a few bumps and bruises couldn't stop him from a full day of the peoples’ business.  Unfortunately, this car accident injured Bond’s left shoulder more than originally thought, resulting in today’s surgery.

While expecting to be sore, Bond stressed that the surgery won’t keep him from his Senate duties.  Under doctor’s orders, Bond will not be able to travel for several weeks, but will be seen back at work in Washington, where he will continue to urge his colleagues in the House to pass critical bipartisan terrorist surveillance legislation, keep pressure on the military to get our warfighters the equipment they need, and help local law enforcement in their fight against drugs, gangs, and violent offenders.
