VARIETY SUMMARY
This report summarizes the re
sults of a June survey of
approximately 1,400 South Da
kota oat producers. Percents
and acreage data are included at
the State and agricultural district
levels. A sincere thank you to
those producers who assisted in
making this report possible.
Don remained the most popular
oat variety in South Dakota in
1996. It was seeded on 20.1
percent of the oat acres.
Compared to previous years,
this year's oat acreage was
more evenly distributed among
the top five varieties. Burnett
edged out Settler to remain the
second most popular oat
variety. Settler's growing
popularity moved Hytest into
fourth. Troy followed as the
fifth most popular oat variety.
These top five varieties
accounted for 84.2 percent of
the total oats seeded.
from last year's record low of
350,000 acres.
Don ranked first with 20.1 per
cent, or 80,600 acres, in the
State. It was down from 34.5
percent in 1992. Burnett has
steadily declined in use but still
ranked second with 17.5 per
cent, or 70,100 acres. Settler
overtook Hytest as the third
leading variety seeded on 17.4
percent of the acres. Hytest
ranked fourth at 15.4 percent.
Even though it dropped in rank,
as a percent of the State acre
age it continued to increase.
Virtually unknown in 1992, Troy
jumped into fifth place this year
with 13.8 percent, or 55,100
acres.
Other varieties reported in the
survey with over 0.5 percent of
the State's oat acreage were
Jerry, Otana, Kelly, Nodaway,
Newdak, and Valley.
