CAMP FRETTERD, MD -- Cadets from the Carroll Composite Squadron of Civil Air Patrol joined over 200 cadets, ages 12-20, from eight states for the annual Tri-Wing Encampment held at Camp Fretterd, near Reisterstown. Graduation ceremonies were held July 31 on the parade grounds.
The Tri-Wing Encampment, an annual training exercise, is a prerequisite for cadet advancement. Activities include leadership and military drill training, rappelling from a 100-foot tower, rides in c-130 airplanes and Black Hawk helicopters, obstacle courses, aerospace classes, drug/alcohol prevention exercises, and volleyball competitions, as well as daily competitions among the squadrons and flights. The encampment ends with an awards banquet and a pass-and-review parade for parents.
Carroll cadets included eight basic trainees and six cadet staff members. In addition to this, one Carroll cadet attended the Cadet Leadership Academy, which coincided with the encampment. Two senior members from the squadron also assisted during the ten-day event.
Carroll Composite Squadron cadets Tyler Czarnowsky, Lauren Cahill, Alec Geatches, Russell Gehret, Alex Gnau, Justin Main, Rick Stuart, and Zach Zaykoski completed the training.
In addition to these graduates, six Carroll squadron cadets attended in staff positions. These cadets have graduated from the encampment in previous years and returned to help train this years cadets or serve in administrative capacities. Cadet Chiara Burgan served as a flight sergeant and   cadets Ian McHale and Nick Krionderis were cadet medics. Cadet Justin Sova served on the public affairs staff while Cadet Jenn Reed was the cadet public affairs officer and website officer. Cadet Jacob Reed was on the standards and evaluation team, responsible for daily inspections of the basic cadets and the training they were receiving.
The Cadet Leadership Academy, an advanced leadership course taught by Air National Guard personnel for cadet NCOs and officers, took place during the same time period at the camp. Carroll Cadet Alex Cahill completed the training. He earned the "Best Classroom Training" award for his 20-minute presentation during the course.
Two senior members also attended the encampment. Flight Officer Nicole Zabetakis served as a tactical officer for squadron three. First Lt. Brenda Reed was the administrative officer for the encampment. She was presented the "Outstanding Senior Officer" award during the banquet.
Civil Air Patrol, the official U.S. Air Force Auxiliary, is a civilian, volunteer, nonprofit, service organization. Its three missions include aerospace education, emergency services (including search and rescue operations), and cadet programs. CAP's cadet programs provide young men and women with a safe and motivating environment in which to grow and explore opportunities in the military and aviation industries. Cadets progress through a 16-step program of leadership and aerospace education.
The Carroll Composite Squadron meets Tuesday evenings at Winters Mill High School on Gorsuch Road in Westminster. Prospective cadets, ages 12-18, and their parents are always welcome. More information about Tri-Wing Encampment can be found at www.carrollcap.org/triwing.
