Abstract: (CIT): Center for Cancer Research - National Cancer Institute Grand Rounds Dr. Ian Tannock is the Daniel E Bergsagel Professor of Medical Oncology at the Princess Margaret Hospital and the University of Toronto. He obtained his PhD from the Institute of Cancer Research, London UK in 1968 and his MD form University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia USA in 1974. His laboratory-based research is in physiological causes of resistance to chemotherapy in solid tumours and methods of overcoming them. His clinical research has involved studies directed to improving the quality of clinical trials, with a particular interest in use of symptom control and quality of life as endpoints in clinical trials. He has led several large clinical trials for patients with prostate cancer and breast cancer, and recently has undertaken studies of fatigue and cognitive dysfunction associated with chemotherapy. He has received several awards including the 2001 Professor of Survivorship award from the Susan G Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, and the 2003 Harold Warwick prize by the National Cancer Institute of Canada for contributions to cancer control. The primary educational objective of these seminars is to provide new information, ideas, and discussion about timely areas of research with impact on the field of oncology. A secondary educational objective is to elicit participation by individuals from all divisions of the intramural NCI, and thus facilitate more interactions among investigators and groups in the NCI.
