Bradbury Science Museum serving up some Pi on March 14

By Ed Vigil

March 8, 2007

No matter how you slice it, Pi will be the special of the day at the Bradbury Science Museum from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, March 14. Not the round, baked fruit or cream-filled version, but the mathematical sometimes squared variety, the Pi most commonly known as 3.14159.

Helping visitors explore the connections between math and science, museum educators will guide participants in all kinds of Pi related fun and interactive learning activities.

“The event is for all ages from pre-school to adult,” said Liz Martineau of the Bradbury Science Museum. “Pi Day is a hands-on way for kids and adults to practice their science skills using math to describe the patterns, movement, and changes that we observe in our everyday lives.”

Scheduled activities include a scavenger hunt for young children along with an experiment that allows participants to add their own personal data to a list of others for observing patterns and trends along with other fun experiences, she said.

“We are expecting a lot of visitors, including home schoolers, visiting teachers and local students and their families, and for those who may not be able to attend the Pi Day event, many of the exhibits and activities will be available in the museum’s tech lab until May,” said Martineau.

“Pi Day is just one activity that we have planned for the museum. Our goal is to have continuously changing activities in our tech lab, at least several times a year,” said Martineau “We have a lot of activities for families; it’s free, you don’t have to leave the hill, and it’s a great way for parents and children to explore science together.”

Rooted in the San Francisco Exploratorium’s annual public celebration that began in 1987, Pi Day is celebrated around the world in a variety of different ways -– some of which include pie you can actually eat.

The Bradbury Science Museum is part of the Laboratory’s Community Programs Office (CPO).
