Transmittal of Open-File Report 87-245 "Determination of Stream Reaeration Coefficients by Use of Tracers" In Reply Refer To: August 14, 1987 WGS-Mail Stop 415 OFFICE OF SURFACE WATER TECHNICAL MEMORANDUM NO. 87.10 Subject: PUBLICATIONS--Transmittal of Open-File Report 87-245 "Determination of Stream Reaeration Coefficients by Use of Tracers" by F. A. Kilpatrick, R. E. Rathbun, N. Yotsukura, G. W. Parker, and L. L. DeLong Attached is a copy of the subject Open-File Report that was prepared by the U.S. Geological Survey as a preliminary report to a forthcoming Techniques of Water-Resources Investigations report on the same subject. This manual describes the slug-injection and constant-rate-injection methods of performing gas-tracer desorption measurements. Emphasis is on the use of rhodamine WT dye as a relatively conservative tracer and propane as the nonconservative gas tracer, on planning field tests, methods of injection, sampling and analysis, and computational techniques to compute desorption and reaeration coefficients. The report covers measurement techniques for both one- and two-dimensional dispersion situations thus, measurements can be made on wide streams where lateral mixing is incomplete. The computer program referred to in the report is available from the Office of Surface Water. A limited number of additional copies of the report are available in the Office of Surface Water.
