Introduction to Amphibians and Reptiles Amphibian and Reptile events in Hawaii and around the Pacific Basin
Amphibians and reptiles are very important vertebrates on the islands of the Pacific. Surprisingly, given their importance, there are only six reptiles native to the Hawaiian Islands and all of them live in the sea. The rest of Hawaii's reptiles and amphibians are invaders. They've been brought by the humans that have come to Hawaii, first the Polynesians and then the Europeans. Some of these alien species have settled into the ecology of Hawaii fairly well, but others cause problems because they eat the food of the native animals, or they just plain eat the native animals. Also, some, like the Coqui frog, are very loud and disturb the human inhabitants of the islands. More?
