Global Vegetation Processing System Products

line

The Globle Vegetation Processing System (GVPS) is designed to generate global vegetation health and vegetation fraction products based on weekly GVI data.

********************

The GVPS delivers an integrated software application system that is capable of full automation in operation and provides customized user control through the application GUI towards the generation of real time weekly land surface NDVI, Green Vegetation Fraction (GVF), and vegetation health products. The primary product of this system is GVF. The secondary products are drought mornitoring indices including weekly Vegetation Condition Index (VCI), Temperature Condition Index (TCI), and Vegetation-Temperature Index (VTI) or the so-called Vegetation Health (VH) Index. Other intermediate products include Smoothed NDVI (SMN) and Smoothed Temperature (SMT). The data and images are available for the interested regions.

Green Vegetation Fraction

The GVF is the primary product of this system, which is important for land surface heat fluxes calculation in coupled land-atmospheric models. In this system, GVF is derived weekly using ACDF adjusted smoothed NDVI, which is based on the 6 selected year's smoothed NDVI.

Vegetation Health Index

The Vegetation Health Index is based on a combination of VCI and TCI, which is also called Vegetation-Temparature Index. It is effective enough to be used as proxy data for monitoring vegetation health, drought, moisture and thermal condition etc.

Available products include Smoothed NDVI, Smoothed Temperature, Vegetation Condition Index, and Temperature Condition Index.

NDVI values range from -.1 to .703 and are unitless. Values greater than .1 generally denote increasing degrees in the greeness and intensity of vegetation. Values between 0 and .1 are commonly characteristic of rocks and bare soil, and values less than 0 sometimes indicate clouds, rain, and snow.

NOTE: Low values of NDVI do not necessarily denote lack of vegetation. For example, during the winter months deciduous forests may appear more orange than green.
