Abstract: |
This chapter is from a book that helps readers coping with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) use a holistic approach to manage their symptoms. This chapter focuses on the role of alternative medicine for IBS. The author notes that homeopathy, osteopathy, herbal medicine, hypnotherapy, Chinese medicine and acupuncture, naturopathy, Ayurvedic medicine, and many other alternative practices can be effective for dealing with a wide range of problems, including IBS, because they emphasize treatment of the whole person rather than simply suppressing symptoms. The author discusses each of the alternative approaches listed above, as well as other forms including shiatsu, reflexology, autogenic training, biofeedback, somatics, Bach flower remedies, and aromatherapy. Readers are encouraged to arrange for personal consultation with a trained practitioner in the form of alternative medicine they are hoping to use. 1 figure. |
