GEDRI Project: Annual reproductive cycle of largemouth bass and common carp in the Mid-Northeastern Area.
0. Country: United States
1. Sponsor Organization: U.S. Geological Survey, Biological Resources Division
2. Project Title: Annual reproductive cycle of largemouth bass and common carp in the Mid-Northeastern Area.
3. Project Focus:
- Project Primary Focus: Ecological Effects
- Project Secondary Focus: Exposure Assessment
4. Description:
Largemouth bass and common carp are commonly used as indicator organisms for
endocrine research, for example in the BEST monitoring, NAWQA, and other
programs. However, little is understood about the environmentally induced
endocrine disruption in these fish. This project will research the histologic
cycle in these fish from different geographic areas and document histologic
differences among gonadal sections for developmental stages, histologic
biomarkers, or mixed sex determination. Monthly differences among histologic
biomarkers will be noted. Correlations of these histologic biomarkers with
plasma hormone and vitellogenin will be made monthly.
