The Federal Aviation Administration Central Region has proposed $260,000 in civil penalties against four companies for violating regulations for carrying hazardous materials aboard aircraft.
The companies were cited for improperly packaging, labeling, and documenting the shipments or for allowing untrained employees to package and handle hazardous materials. Shipments included a leaking engine and oxygen generators.
All incidents occurred during 1997. The proposed civil penalties were issued to the companies between February and June 1998.
Copies of FAA's letters notifying the companies of the proposed civil penalties are available to the media on request.
These companies had 30 days from receipt of the FAA notice to submit a reply to the agency. This announcement is made in accordance with the FAA's practice of releasing information to the public on newly issued enforcement actions involving penalties of $50,000 or more.
