The manegement of HIV/AIDS patients at General Hospital in Merauke district,Papua province,Indonesia.

Issue: Generasl Hospital in Merauke is a regional public hospital in Merauke, distric of Merauke, Papua Province, Indonesia. The hospital, as a public health servicer, gives treatment in a variety of diseases include HIV/AIDS cases. There are 82 cases of HIV/AIDS have been treated in this hospital. Based on the cathegory of age, 2 cases of them found in less than 10 year old patient, 7 cases were between 10 to 19 year old, 35 cases between 20 to 19 year old, 24 cases between 30 to 39 year old, 13 cases between 40 to 49 year old, and one case found in 50 years old patient. Merauke genaral hospital, in the management of HIV/AIDS patients, has been trying to joint with some local foundations, let them take part on some efforts to manage the sufferers, such as supplying medicines and foods. Description: During the period of 1993-October 1998, in RSU Merauke, all in patients who were suspected or show some related clinical symptoms of HIV/AIDS were subjected to get blood examination named Dipstik and Serodia test. If the test is positive, the subjects treated with kotrimoxazole and other treatments for opportunistic diseases, such as oral candidiasis, chronic diarrhoea, tuberculose and chronic upper respiratory tract infections. A nutrious food was given for patients with rapidly lose of body weight. All treatment efforts given in Merauke general Hospital are focussed to cure the opportunistic diseases. The antiviral medicine is too expensive for them. Conclusion: Under the condition that mentioned above, General hospital in Merauke is seemingly found some difficulty in performing the best treatments of HIV/AIDS patients. General hospital in Merauke must be equipped with qualified laboratory for prompt diagnostic result. The skill of the workers should be promoted, and the cooperation with the public foundations should be builded intensively to manage the social problems excesses.
