  • About the Artists
  • Encore Chamber Orchestra. The Encore Chamber Orchestra was initiated in 1993 as a project of Daniel Hege, former Music Director of the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestras (CYSO). Encore is a thirty-five member tuition-free ensemble, composed of top CYSO musicians and alumni by invitation of the conductor. Its programs are designed to provide specialized training and performance opportunities to serious career-track musicians. Encore repertoire includes works rarely performed by other orchestras. In 1997, the ensemble made a world premiere recording entitled “Violin Concertos by Black Composers of the 18th and 19th Centuries,” which featured violinist Rachel Barton.

The Encore Chamber Orchestra performs at major Chicago venues and makes periodic international tours. During its second full season, Encore toured the United Kingdom, where they performed concerts in London, Cambridge, Stratford, and as a part of the chamber music series at Birmingham Symphony Hall. In 1998, the ensemble toured Eastern Europe, performing in Prague and Sofia, Bulgaria. Last year, Encore was featured at concerts held by the Chicago Cultural Center and the Union League Club of Chicago for former president George Bush. This season, Encore participated in an exchange with the Greater Boston Youth Chamber Orchestra, which included a joint performance at Pick-Staiger Concert Hall in January and concluded when Encore traveled to Boston in April to perform at the Isabella Stuart Gardner Museum.

Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestras. Founded in 1946, the CYSO organization has grown from a single orchestra to a multi-faceted organization internationally renowned for producing the next generation of professional musicians and conductors. Winner of three ASACP awards for adventurous programming, the CYSO is committed to providing music opportunities and resources to all Chicagoland youth. The organization has developed a program that offers the finest in pre-professional training for three orchestras, an impressive chamber music program, theory classes, two innovative outreach programs, and exciting performance opportunities for current members and alumni.

Terrance Gray, conductor. Nominated in 1998 for “Musician of the Year” by Chicago AFM 10-208, Terrance Gray's emerging career as a conductor and violinist has garnered him national and international recognition. He studied violin and conducting at DePaul University with Ruben Gonzales, Marc Zinger, and Elizabeth Grabow Mueller (violin) and Michael Morgan, Dr. Gregory Lyons, and Gordon Peters (conducting). Since 1992, when Mr. Gray became principal conductor of the South Side Family Chamber Orchestra, his conducting career has flourished. In 1994, he became the principal conductor of the Chicago Youth Concert Orchestras, which led to engagements at the Grant Park Music Festival and the Rocky Ridge Music Festival in Colorado. Last season, Mr. Gray added the additional responsibility of conducting the Chicago Youth Strings at Beverly and was named Associate Conductor of the Illinois Chamber Symphony.

Mr. Gray is an accomplished violinist, teacher, and chamber musician, and his broad musical interests stretch well beyond classical music. He is concertmaster of the jazz ensemble Orbert Davis with Strings Attached and the Chicago Sinfonietta ensemble that appears with the Apostolic Church of God on their biannual gospel concerts broadcast on FOX. He has also performed worldwide with the avant-garde jazz ensemble Shadow Vingnettes.

Kevin Kosnik, marimba. Kevin Kosnik, 17, is a junior at Glenbrook North High School in Northbrook. He has been studying percussion for 8 years. He is completing his second year with the CYSO, serving this year as Principal Timpanist. He has also been the Principal Timpanist/Percussionist of the Encore Chamber Orchestra for two years. Kevin was a finalist in the recent CYSO concerto competition and performed the Rosauro concerto with his high school wind ensemble earlier this year. Last fall, he was named Principal Timpanist of the Illinois Music Educators Association District 7 Orchestra. Over the summer, Kevin attended the National High School Music Institute at Northwestern University, where he studied marimba with Michael Burritt. Kevin plans to continue his percussive studies in college.
