Update on Customs Response to Tragedy
Message from Acting Commissioner Charles Winwood

(09/16/2001)
Last Thursday, I traveled to New York City to visit with our displaced employees there and tour the site of the terrorist attacks. The physical devastation I saw was truly shocking. Words cannot begin to describe the scene.

Thankfully, we have now accounted for all Customs employees working in our World Trade Center facility. Despite the tragedy they have been through, the spirit of people in New York remains strong. Many of our employees are carrying on the work of Customs in temporary office space, doing the very best they can under extremely trying circumstances. They are very grateful for the support they have received from their fellow Customs employees across the country. It is us who should be grateful to them.

We have dispatched a team of Employee Assistance Program (EAP) counselors to aid our people in New York. They will provide support addressing the immediate and long-term needs of our employees. Anyone else at Customs affected by this tragedy and in need of assistance should contact the EAP at 1-800-755-7002. Counselors are there to help you. All calls are strictly confidential.

In addition, information and updates related to the events of September 11 have been posted to our Web site. Employees with access to the Internet are encouraged to check the site routinely for news on Customs operations.

Customs has a major role to play in addressing this national challenge. The response from our employees across the country and around the world has been remarkable. Above all, what is important is that we continue to pull together as an organization and do our part to restore a sense of security to America.

I want to add that the expressions of support received from our fellow Customs administrations around the world have been inspiring. I was particularly struck by a note I received from the Commissioner of New Zealand Customs. In it, he offered a traditional New Zealand proverb: Be strong, remain strong.

Though every one of our Customs employees has been accounted for, many in New York and possibly elsewhere have close friends and relatives among those lost to this tragedy. Our hearts, our thoughts, and our prayers go out to all of you.
