CARE-Rangpur, Rangpur, Bangladesh

ISSUE: Rapid Situation Assessment (RSA) on knowledge on STD / HIV / AIDS of a college students at the Rangpur city, the north west part of Bangladesh. DESCRIPTION: While working with the transport/truckers populations on STD/ HIV / AIDS it was observed that they are not only the high-risk group. But the literate persons especially the college students are also found in unsafe sex behavior. About 15,000 (male & female) students of Carmicheal College are living in different private dormitories of Rangpur town. Some of these students (male) came across to CARE operated Truckers Drop In Centers (DIC) with STD cases. They felt shy to disclose their disease and sex practices even to the doctor. It makes us curious to find out exact picture of these students. Then we talked to the students and teachers to conduct a RSA to assess the knowledge on STD / HIV / AIDS. Upon their positive response a questionnaire was developed and assessed one hundred number of students on random basis. Later, it was figured out that 61% of students knowledge on STD / HIV / AIDS is poor while 48% of them practice unsafe sex. It occurs mostly among the male and female students and some of them practice outside the campus. This information might be helpful to design a project on college students. LESSONS LEARNED: It is often assumed that literate persons are aware of STD/HIV/AIDS and therefore we do not feel to include them in the targeted intervention. In fact to reduce the transmission of STD/HIV in a country, these students group should also be addressed properly. RECOMMENDATION: Premarital sex are not uncommon in the literate youths. Therefore, attention should also be given along with the targeted high-risk populations.
